What Actually Makes a Mattress Organic?
An organic mattress is built from materials that are grown and processed without synthetic pesticides or petroleum based chemicals, and instead crafted from organic cotton, organic wool, and natural latex foam made from the sap of rubber trees. Look for certifications like GOTS (for cotton and wool) and GOLS (for latex), which verify the materials all the way back to the farm. GREENGUARD Gold and MADE SAFE are two more labels that set quality organic mattresses apart from cheap ones.
Organic mattresses do NOT include the materials found in the vast majority of mattresses sold in America. Materials like poly foam or memory foam, which are derivatives of petroleum and contain massive amounts of chemical additives. Organic mattresses contain no fiberglass or chemical flame retardants, and forego the use of toxic laminates.
Beyond the materials themselves, organic mattresses are built differently. Many, including most of the models below, are hand tufted rather than glued, which holds the layers in place without chemical adhesives and provides a longer lifespan. Wool is an all natural flammability barrier, while also naturally regulating temperature. Latex foam is buoyant and responsive, removing pressure points while still providing support. And pocketed coils provide superior adaptive support for ergonomic alignment while maximizing airflow and temperature management.
